Our season begins with music by two consummate men of the theater. Leonard Bernstein’s witty and vivacious Candide straddles the worlds of musical theater and operetta as it skewers intellectual pretentions. Richard Strauss’ breathtakingly beautiful opera Der Rosenkavalier conjures the waning days of the Hapsburg Empire through magical waltzes and the story of a bittersweet love triangle. Vivian Fung’s Earworms is a feisty and whimsical orchestral piece depicting the distractions and multitasking of contemporary life. Pianist Cecile Licad joins us for Saint-Saëns’ brilliant Piano Concerto No. 2.
