The Fresno Philharmonic, and music director Rei Hotoda, are pleased to present the launch of Cultural Crossroads, a new multi-season series of commissions exploring and celebrating the diverse cultures of the Fresno region. The inaugural Cultural Crossroads project features a first-time collaboration with the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music (GLFCAM). Called Cultural Crossroads: Kisetsu (“seasons” in Japanese), the centerpiece of this first project is the commission of a new work by composers Hitomi Oba and Erika Oba based on the writings of David “Mas” Masumoto, a Central Valley writer and organic peach farmer.
An Immersive Experience
We encourage you to read Shadow Music while listening to the recording of Meguru, to fully experience the connection between these two phenomenal works of art. This 2025 publication of essays shares the writings that inspired the new musical composition Meguru: Dreams of Harvest by Hitomi Oba and Erika Oba, which we premiered on February 15 and 16, 2025. What’s the sound that embodies family and community? How do you capture a story of a people that can be transposed into a musical composition and generate a new, broader understanding? Do family and community histories cast a shadow over our futures-which may crescendo into a sharp or a flat note?
-David Mas Masumoto on his newest work, Shadow Music
